FABRIC is an NSF-funded research infrastructure consisting of distributed computing and storage resources located at 35 national and international sites interconnected by high-bandwidth networks. FABRIC can store and process information "in the network" in ways not possible in the current Internet, which enables completely new protocols, architectures and applications not previously possible. FABRIC provides a flexible, open platform for the deployment and experimentation with new applications that span research and commercial infrastructures, including cloud resources. FABRIC enables AI applications involving distributed training of AI models, federated learning, distributed computing (GPU, FPGA, and CPU) and inferencing, persistent storage, precision timing for packet level timestamping, Quality of Service (QoS) guaranteed performance, and connectivity to partner resources ranging from High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters, to public clouds, to campus infrastructure, and other national testbeds and cyberinfrastructure. FABRIC maintains a catalog of accurately timestamped events and data from its distributed systems and infrastructure. FABRIC is not appropriate for use solely as a computing platform.
