Pest ID helps farmers identify and remove pests

Users can upload photos of weeds or insects, identify them, and learn how to remove them.

A decade in the making, Iowa State researchers developed the AI-based Pest ID app, which is already showing great promise, including labor cost savings and early identification of pests. Young pests require less work to remove, in turn helping to preserve natural resources.

“This tool is going to give farmers confidence,” said Arti Singh, a researcher and associate professor behind the app, said in a KCCI Des Moines report. Singh is also part of the management team at the AI Institute for Resilient Architecture (AIIRA).

According to the report, researchers are working to expand the app to identify diseases that impact plant life.
