Building the Foundation of Tomorrow's AI

Most older adults want to stay in their own homes. But a stove left on, a missed medication, or a fall with no one around can end that independence overnight. AI-CARING at Georgia Tech is building smart home systems tested with over 100 Georgia families through the Emory-Georgia Tech Cognitive Empowerment Program.

The AI detects when a stove is left on, sends medication reminders, coordinates caregiver schedules, and alerts family members to safety concerns. As one researcher put it: "AI is not going to become a home nurse. Our AI system seeks to support human caregivers by offloading logistics and reminders, so people can focus on the more positive aspects of care." Translation: a daughter who calls her mom can finally just talk to her, instead of running through a checklist.
